Milk Replacer ~ How to make the switch
While change is often necessary, this can be stressful for young animals and that includes switching up their food supply.
A gradual switch from feeding whole milk to milk replacer or from one milk replacer to another is always the best solution. We suggest this gradual approach be done over several days.
Start by feeding 75% of whole milk along with 25% of the new milk replacer solution for a few days. Continue decreasing the percentage of the whole milk and increasing the milk replacer solution over a period of several days until the animal is fully converted to the milk replacer. Use this same process when switching from one milk replacer to another milk replacer product until the new milk replacer powder is the only one being fed.
This process will cause less stress on the animal and decrease feed refusal along with other stomach upset symptoms that may occur.
